Question About Torin Possible Spoiler

After I finished Unity Torin said we needed to go the place with the Watchtower database. Instead of going right away I went to the Lodge and spoke to Vladimir and got the location of two artifacts. I now find that Torin comes with me along with another companion and he no longer is listed on my crew roster for my home ship. I can not reassign him as clicking on his name in the crew assignment screen gets no response. In addition, he only says that we still have gotten the Watchtower database when I try to talk to him. At the very least he should still be on my crew roster. I don’t mind having an extra member of my landing party but I still want him as part of my crew.

Torin is automatically unassigned from crew during Lost In Transmission and becomes a follower until quest completion, which was an intentional decision. He can be reassigned to your crew after this quest finishes - though, note that in the next quest he is a follower for a portion of it.

But why can he not still keep his crew assignment while this is ongoing? The two shouldn’t be mutually exclusive.

For technical reasons - some assignments may lead to Torin being left in awkward or problematic positions, such as being on a fleet ship or home ship when he needs to be present for the quest.

But if he is on my ship and we are traveling (not landed or docked) then his skills should still affect the ship.
