In Plain Sight quest help

On another forum post it says the bards emissary ring is rewarded for convincing the leader of the conspiracy to join the bards college during the final emissary quest “in plain sight”. I missed this the first playthrough, but now I’m trying to get it on my second character and I can’t seem to find a way to convince the guy? My only options cause him to aggro, and bringing norlund over just ends the quest.

How do you convince the lead conspirator? Or is the ring rewarded later after being given the initial rewards for capturing the leader conspicuously?

Convincing the leader to turn himself in (or a number of other outcomes) relies on the emissary mini-game you have with him, which I believe becomes available after using persuasion or intimidation. If you select the option where he joins the college as an emissary, you are gifted the ring by Valerine.
