Can you stop ballads from being played?

After finishing the story, or maybe even before, is there any controle over how often and which ballads are being played and maybe even an option to stop them beeing played completely after they have been written?

There isn't currently a gameplay setting for this, however you can ask the singer to stop playng, as well as change ballads.

So, if I understand you correctly (english is not my first language), I can walk up to them while they are playing and then ask them to stop for the moment but not prevent them from playing in the future?
It is the only reason I was holding back purchasing it, because I think I will get annoyed pretty quick in a long playthrough if theses ballads are being played everytime I enter a city.

Correct. Ballads are not essential gameplay though, they are an optional feature.
