It was requested, so here it is!
A thread where you can ask the guy who wrote the Watchtower story questions!

I'll try to answer what I can, but now and again there may be something I wont answer due to wanting to avoid future spoilers...

Ask away!

I have 4!

How long did it take to write Watchtower?

Did you already play starfield? Or did kinggath ask you to try it, so you could write stories in that world? Or did you somehow just study the lore without playing it?

Did you write extensive lore and Torin's full backstory before writing the script? Or are you just really good at eluding to extensive lore and backstory, without actually having it down.

Now that codename:Albatross and codename:Bastion are "bonded", could Watchtower use them to make a bridge between worlds, by trapping Albatross and tossing Bastion through an armillary?
Thus possibly connecting with other Watchtowers...

Thank you

Were you in part inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer's later-season Initiative storylines, in which the inevitable slippage of the masquerade in the age of cellphones and webcams caused the US government to take notice of the supernatural world and respond? In the future, might we see more about how Watchtower (and perhaps similar organizations, WT seems somewhat aligned with one of the major powers, but their tactics would almost have to either involve the other major power, or invite an INTENSE response from them) interacts with the major governments? The fact they're not legally criminals, and I have to
sell them into slavery
turn them in to Ecliptic or the Crimson Fleet when I take them alive instead of to the guards, certainly implies some things about that relationship.

If Torin was a tree, what kind of tree would he be?

Has anyone in KGC played with my DarkStar Patch yet, and did you find the services kiosk?

What're the chances we get a short story about the time Harper
blew Torin out an airlock?
Because I bet that's the funniest story ever.

I am so confused. Lol. Ok
who sold who into slavery? Is there slavery in the settled systems?

Useful Brigs and Non-Lethal Framework mods. Lets you capture people instead of killing them. If you put them in your brig, if they're a criminal faction, you can turn them over to guards (sadly, not Stardock guards, somebody should patch this before I mess around and do it myself) for credits: if they're civilians, the only people who will take them are Ecliptic and Crimson Fleet. What happens to them then is... not defined. :D

Brainstorming sessions, quite fun and of course thought expanding. Then you gather your minions of amazing individuals and dreams become reality. Thank you first of all for all that y'all have done and will do in the future. I know your holding your breaths until the next DLC comes out as that will shape your ideas and strategy. I merely ask, what are the next possibilities? I am curious as well, do forum post give your thinktank ideas that you use in your mods?

To acquire ALL watchtower technology after you finally defeat them in that universe. Everything that was watchtower now belongs to you the winner. But you have to ask, is are watchtower technologies in alternate universes different? Would be an amazing mod I would think.

According to my notes, Watchtower took about 4 Months to write, give or take.

I played Starfield on release, but didn't get too far. So I did my best to research lore, watch full playthroughs (on 2x speed) and such to ensure what we made would fit in well.

On any project, I'll take as much time as I can to brainstorm things, come up with plot elements and so on. So there is always at least a loose structure to our projects. But there are always things I just figure out in the middle of writing. It's a mix!

As for the spoiler question... I had not considered Watchtower being sneaking in that manner. But is something I shall keep in mind! There is more I want to expand upon on that area, but we'll have to wait for mod size limits to be increased a little more first...

I watched Buffy when it originally aired (in the UK), and then many years later began a rewatch. But to this day, I've never actually finished the series, so wasn't aware of that plot line! But it does sound similar to the concept of the "masquerade" in the Vampire: The Masquerade games, which I'm very aware of. I'm sure I took some inspiration from those general concepts!

I won't say no to more Watchtower content in the future! There is more I would like to explore there. But we'll have to figure out how we'll pull that off.

And I think Torin was a tree, he would be a Dogwood tree!

I'm aware of Darkstar, but yet to play with it. I try to avoid playing with mods while we're actively developing things. It helps keep me grounded to what the base game experience is, and also ensure I don't accidentally "borrow" ideas or concepts from the work of others. (Others on the team may've played with Darkstar and your patch though!)

Hah, I think you've got all Harper or Torin will tell you about that story. I think it's more fun to imagine the details of their little fight, instead of outright telling them.

We have some other areas in Starfield we have ideas for, but I won't spoil those just yet... I will say our aim always tends to be to expand on something within the base game, but also ensure what we add feels natural.

We definitely pay attention to what people say on the forums, on Discord and elsewhere. We’re very receptive to feedback on things we’ve released, and things that people might want in the future.

You're probably sick of us asking but please 🙏 please Torin romance 😀
Having your audience fall in love with your protagonist is surely a wonderful feeling, of which one could never grow tired ❤️

Torin's is already the greatest love story in starfield. Even without romance. He already loves your starborn so much that he
bonded permanently, to be dragged through unities, for what appears to be an immortal lifetime!
. Torin arguably has well surpassed romance. 😆 As adoring fan would put it; romance is "ordinary" compared to such an unyielding and unbreakable bond!

That said, yes please! I would also love more; a deepening relationship with Torin. A romance/bromance
that endures through the unities
could be a story for the ages.

The question is... can you write that? And do you want to? 😍

Why did you make Watchtower ships so hard to capture on the ground? That is the one thing I would like to see changed.

FYI anybody who may not have been aware of it, besides the
something
tag, XenForo also has a [ispoiler] something [/ispoiler] tag for inline spoilers so sentences don't have to be broken up.

This is an example of using
spoiler
tag in a sentence versus the inline spoiler tag in a sentence. :)

I'll try to answer what I can, but now and again there may be something I wont answer due to wanting to avoid future spoilers...
How deeply rooted is the Watchtower organization in the various factions to allow them to have built such a huge network of stations, space stations, and ships without anybody seeming to have noticed? Will we see any related WT conspiracy 'deep moles' or WT corruption within the factions in for future stories?

Hi Sirrick, I have a question; for all of us chaotic/kindabad players.
Torin is of course a very "good" person.
At the moment, when I dump an ai mech or terrormorph on Jemison, or shoot up the guards instead of paying the 50 cred fine, Torin just yells "what are you doing" and "I wont go down this path with you" then he leaves the party.
But when I return to the ship, he is totally fine and rejoins my team with his usual smile.

Main companions in this situation will refuse to talk for a while, and won't join the player. Then after some time, they will talk; mainly to yell at the player for being wicked, then there is some kind of persuade minigame, which results in either forgiveness or more grumpy silence.

My question: Did you write (or will you, with more space for dialogue) something along these lines for Torin?
Like answering the player with an angry face and a disgusted huff, refusing to join.
Then some kind of "how could you" speech.
Then, following a successful persuasion, a "I want to believe in you" statement.

And if Torin has already bonded with the player, to be dragged through unities with them FOREVER... this should be a VERY serious conversation. Because if the player is actually bad, that's a dire situation for Torin. Kinda unthinkable infact.

Anyway. I'm sure most players are angels and will never encounter this stuff. But for those who occasionally do very bad things... is/was there a plan for this stuff?

Another question:
Did you write lines for Torin for when the player breaks/cripples their leg? We are all using jetpacks and are constantly buggering our legs with rough landings. It seems like a missed opportunity that Torin doesn't mock us every single time. Like there must be an endless number funny of broken leg jokes he could cycle through.
"Break a leg" being an obvious one.
Or "is there a galbank nearby, to check your balance."
Or "I'm not saying anything...it wouldn't be humerus"
Or "what do you say to an ashta with a broken leg... put it down!"
Or "haha. OK. No lame joke this time. "
I'm sure you can think of better ones.

OK, I'm going away now.

are there any fun facts for Torin, Harper, and Gren that you didn't get to include? stuff like favourite food, hobbies, favourite colours, etc? i love these characters so much, id love to learn more about them!

I would also love some sleep dialogue or funny saying like cannon ball when jumping in water.
