Piloting Captured Ships

Lostinwhere

New member
Is it possible to pilot a Watchtower ship after capturing it? I've completed the main quest and I was given the salvage option. However, when I sit in the pilots seat and attempt to take possession of the ship, I get the message," The ships unusual design leaves you unsure how to pilot it." Now my understanding is in order to salvage the ship, you simply sit down in the pilots seat and then just get up. At that point you can salvage the ship. If I attempt to take possession and then salvage the ship, I get the following message: "You must own the ship to salvage it" But, is there a way I can take possession of the ship and add it to my personal fleet and not salvage it? I have been using the mod: Sit to Add Ship to Fleet, https://www.nexusmods.com/starfield/mods/6493?tab=files for quite a while. Usually, I can capture and take possession of most ships.

Edit: I just took out a hub array at Eridani III. I destroyed all ships but one Destroyer III. I disabled and boarded it. After killing the crew, I got the message "Take over or leave the ship." When I hover the cursor over the pilots seat, two boxes appear, Sit and Salvage. If I choose Sit, I get the " The ships unusual design leaves you unsure how to pilot it" message. I don't actually get the option to just sit down and get up. If I then attempt to click on Salvage, I get the "You must own the ship to salvage it" message. I attempted this with the Sit to Add Ship mod enabled and disabled. No difference. So, I don't seem to be able to salvage the ship, which is part of this mod, or pilot the ship which may be not be allowed by the mod.

You need to talk to Gren in order to unlock the piloting service, the same way that salvage got unlocked. Currently this is after destroying three major arrays, though in a future patch this will be reduced to two. The unlock requirements for salvage (non-Watchtower ships) is destroying one major array and returning to Gren.

Since salvaging requires the player to sit in a pilot seat in order to mark it, Watchtower ships cannot be salvaged until this piloting service is unlocked by returning to Gren after meeting the array requirement mentioned above. The requirement for salvage (sitting in a pilot seat) is a deliberate intention so as not to potentially introduce game-breaking bugs for ships that are not designed to be pilotable (such...

Just ran into the exact same situation as Lostinwhere. Disabled and boarded a Destroyer, killed the crew, got the message to leave or take over. When I go to the pilot's seat I get the option to sit or to salvage, but neither works - I get the "Unusual design" and "You must own the ship" messages.

I did have the salvage discussion with Gren before, so I figured I would be able to salvage these ships, even though I can't fly them.

I have amended my comment to provide further clarification.
