Getting killed constantly

I just started a new Starfield play through so I could try Watchtower (big fan of SS2). Reading around, it sounds hard and I'm not great at space combat, so I thought I'd do a few missions, level up, and put some skills into ship combat. I'm at level 20 and haven't selected any Watchtower missions yet, but I keep running into fleets of their hostile ships, who kill me very quickly. Is this normal? Is there some way of avoiding them until I'm ready?

You should be able to grav jump away, however I have passed this feedback on.

Thanks. The trouble is that Watchtower ships are lurking around planets where I need to complete missions. So, I've unloaded it for now and will try again when I'm a few levels higher.
