Laser Turrets Even Less Than Useless - Do They Upgrade

The laser turret is less than useless. A low level Spacer with a moon rock destroys it immediately. I don't see upgrades with Gren, but maybe that comes with time? I'm going to assume the ballistic drop is equally as useless.

What's the scoop?

The turrets themselves don't upgrade, but a heavy laser variant is available for more cores.
