I'm on PC, Steam. I can provide my mod list as well, just in case; My best guess is something graphical related, if I go into the display options and increase fidelity during the problem, sometimes it will fix itself.

You could set them up to only show up during combat. Wouldn't necessarily keep you completely solo all the time, but then you get to use your skydrops and still travel solo, and you don't have to unassign anyone.
